Van Halen Comes To Sydney This one really came out of nowhere. Van Halen are booked to play the Stone Music Festival in Sydney, a two-day event named in honour of 1974 cult Australian film Stone and timed to coincide with ANZAC day. It's on Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21, with Van Halen headlining on the Saturday and Billy Joel on the Sunday. Other acts currently booked to appear include... Read More

2012 was a kinda cool year for hard rock and metal. It probably won't go down in history as a 1967 or anything, but it was still pretty badass. Let's take a look back at some of the notable releases and events of the year. DEPARTURES AND ARRIVALS Who left who in 2012? Who joined what? Chris Amott left Arch Enemy (again). Howard Jones left Killswitch Engaged and original singer Jesse Leach... Read More

Rush On Track For #2 US Debut Yeah I know, I know, I've been talking about it a lot lately, but the new Rush album Clockwork Angels looks set to debut at #2 in the USA this week with sales of between 85,000 and 95,000 copies. Nice work! I have no idea how it's going to go in Australia but hopefully enough people will buy it that promoters will take notice.   Joe Matera Signs UK/Europe Deal... Read More

Well, what a crazy week in metal. Last weekend Black Sabbath played their first show with Ozzy in quite a while, with Ozzy's drummer Tommy Cluefetos standing in for Bill Ward, who is on the outs over a contract dispute. I wouldn't hold your breath for any Australian shows at the moment, but hopefully Tony Iommi's cancer treatment will be successful and they can schedule more shows when he's ready... Read More

It’s been a crazy week for metal and hard rock – particularly the more weathered of our metal brethren. Bill Ward cracks it with the Black Sabbath reunion and the band decides to record without him; Van Halen releases the comeback album to destroy all other comeback albums; Slash's rhythm guitarist Bobby Schneck bails, and Motley Crue kicks off their Vegas residency and – gasp – Vince...           Next month, Van Halen will release their first album with singer David Lee Roth since their 1984 album,1984. I’m going to say no. No to the humourless Eddie Van Halen guitar solo, and especially no to Dave’s disturbing old man efforts to sing in that shitty, dilapidated head voice, which is the first thing former '80s hair metal singers lose, right before... “If I’m wrong, I’ll only let two chicks suck my dick instead of the normal 5. That’s how serious I am. Just wait. I ain’t wrong.” It’s the tweet which sparked one of the biggest local music stories of the year. Steel Panther drummer Stix Zadinia broke the news that the Van Halen-headlined Soundwave Revolution was no more, meaning Steel Panther would not be hitting our shores as planned. Luckily... Read More

Hello there, we (The Melodics) have been working with Beat for many years now (due to the millions of damn gigs we've played) so upon deciding to break up we hit them up and asked if we could interview ourselves…here's what happened. Jeremedy If you had to start a brand new band right now, who would be in it, what would it be called and what style would it be?   Jamie:   It would... Read More

RAWR! Hey guys, can't wait to get myself to Soundwave Rev- oh. Too soon? Nah. The promoters kinda deserve a bit of flack, really, if only for the fact that nobody has told anyone a fucking thing about why it was really cancelled. An honest explanation would've done wonders for their PR, not to mention the sanctity of their Facebook wall. This stuff about Limp Bizkit refusing to play and Van... Read More

Full lineup announced, here it is: The list of bands heading to Oz for Soundwave Revolution is pretty impressive. Despite Weezer reportedly turning down an invitation of $2 million + costs, it's still pretty good. Perhaps they felt a bit awkward about ripping off headliner Van Halen's logo....   Soundwave Revolution 2011 will feature Van Halen (with David Lee Roth), Hole, Alice Cooper,... Read More
BOGAN BINGO: BINGO LOST ITS INNOCENCE

Darren Hilsey grew up in the Gippsland region east of Melbourne, so he feels qualified to muse on bogan culture and its musical associations. “I’ve done my time, so I can reach for the inner bogan,” Hilsey says. Hilsey doesn’t have a definition of bogan, although he does muse being a bogan does involve a preference for comfort over fashion.   About six years ago Hilsey and a group of like-... Read More
