Hi and welcome to this week's Crunch. I guess the big news in metal this week is the restructure at Roadrunner Records by label owner Warner. Roadrunner has done great things for metal for over 30 years now, and the folks at Roadrunner Australia are so dedicated to and passionate about rock and metal. They really understand what it takes to work with and for a metal audience, and I sincerely... Read More

Badd Energy : Third Eye

This "psychedelic ethnicalypse quartet" from New Zealand features a female lead who raps and sings over a heavy stoner bass riff. The atmosphere is kind of M.I.A. meets Tea Party, which would be reasonably awesome if the chorus wasn't such awful hippy nonsense. "I know you told a lie, 'cause I can see it with my third eye," she warbles. Bit of a conversation stopper, that one. Read More

The annual Led Zeppelin celebration Whole Lotta Love has been a winner for a number of reasons. Musical director Joseph Calderazzo digs into the goldmine, unearthing obscurities alongside the hits, and cross-fuse celtic and middle eastern arrangements. The names that they’ve used, like Steve Balbi (Noiseworks), Simon Meli (Sway/The Widowbirds/Oohlala), Zkye and Natasha Stuart — and last year they... Read More

Canadian rocker Jeff Martin has lived a somewhat nomadic existence since leaving The Tea Party in 2005. A solo career with extensive touring was his first port of call, before a move to Ireland saw the formation of power-trio The Armada, co-founded with Wayne Sheehy, with J. Cortez on bass. Martin moved on to Western Australia in 2008, retaining the services of Cortez and recruiting Malcolm Clark... Read More

There’s two words that, when put together in a musical context, can have very different connotations. ‘Sold out’, when applied to a band, usually means has softened or changed their sound in some way in an attempt to increase their radio airplay and find a greater audience. Or consented to their music being used to sell products. Such moves are usually met with derision from hardcore fans.... Read More

This is renowned Aussie band The Eternal's fourth album, and while their previous releases have been extremely strong affairs, Under A New Sun is definitely their most complete work to date.
