Andrew Bird : Break It Yourself
0 Comments. 1,340 Views. Posted 21 Mar 2012 @ 6:07am.
There are those who appear different and those who are different. Chicago-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird is undoubtedly peculiar, genuinely and endearingly so. And these days, Bird is a level above most of his experimental/indie contemporaries. Being a violin virtuoso hasn’t confined his reach, but illuminated his aspiration of creating strangely harmonious... Read More

Lambchop : Mr M

Four years has been the biggest gap between Lambchop albums, but when Kurt Wagner’s gruff, gentle vocal cuts in with the lyric ‘Don't know what the fuck they talk about’ on the new album’s opening song If Not I’ll Just Die, it’s as if they’d never been away. And just like that particular lyric, Wagner hasn’t paid any mind to what has been happening outside his bubble and dishes up some... Read More

Shade of March : Way to Keep Warm
0 Comments. 824 Views. Posted 8 Dec 2011 @ 3:43pm.
David Gagliardi (ex-Laura) has written a very intense tune about emotional collapse, in which the songwriter is laid bare, both literally and figuratively. Musically, Way To Keep Warm is a slow brew of piano and plucked guitar notes, careful layers that are subtle and atmospheric, particularly in contrast to David’s naked, keening voice. Read More

Laura Jean: A Fool Who’ll

Laura Jean’s third album, A fool who’ll, is a little like a Melbourne weather report; ‘dark clouds forming, sunny at times with rain easing’. Just like a day in our wonderful city, this experience is rich and enjoyable. Most notable to the sound of A fool who’ll is Laura Jean’s newly-utilised electric guitar which leads a variety of stringed instruments, horns, well-placed keys and accordion.... Read More

I'm a solo artist so I guess the band is called Nik Lone! I sing and write the songs. I was on tour in the USA with Goodnight Thomas. I ended up having to use more strings than usual during those shows. It felt pretty cool so I decided to write music that used mainly strings and piano instead of guitar/bass/drums. Aside from loving the sounds of string sections, I wanted to write new... Read More

Mention 'art' to the average person, and it'll conjure images of oil paintings in the national gallery, or century-old sculptures. Not many think of sound art, a creative phenomenon that is growing in popularity in Australia. But what exactly is sound art? Electroacoustic artist David Brown defines it as "the systematic organisation and transformation of visual and sonic phenomena that may... Read More

Sounds Of Omar Souleyman

Syrian musician Omar Souleyman is playing three Australian shows in early March. For the past 15 years, he and his group have emerged as a staple of folk-pop, his sounds reflecting Syrian street culture casio-craziness strained through the timeless folk world of the Middle East. The musical traditions of the region are evident in the music of Souleyman and his band, who intertwine... Read More
