Deap Vally

They’re sexy, they’re sultry and they’re the embodiment of all that was debauched and depraved in ‘70s rock. Los Angeles two-piece Deap Vally – drummer Julie Edwards and singer/guitarist Lindsay Troy – are no tribute band or novelty act. They play driving, hard rock and perform it with an energy that feels like they might kick you in the face and plant a giant kiss on you on your way to the... Read More
Jack White @ Festival Hall

There he was, the defining rock star of the 2000s, indulging in what he denied himself for so long. These days, Jacky White is touring with twice as many backing bands than he once had bandmates. Tonight featured The Peacocks, whereas the following Splendour set alternated between The Peacocks and whatever the all-male counterpart is called. But it doesn’t really matter – the gimmick is probably... Read More
Youth Lagoon

Trevor Powers is an over-laugher. Some might attribute it to nerves, but in the hands of the Idaho-born 22-year-old better known by the stage moniker Youth Lagoon, over-laughing becomes a device semi-consciously employed to put his fellow interlocutor at ease. Finding myself in this position and similarly prone to the gratuitous guffaw, I’m appreciative that Powers – the lo-fi musician whose 2011... Read More
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

On stage, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are loud and loose, a magnificent mash-up of jazz, funk, soul and hip hop. Eight brothers born and raised in the crime-riddled south side of Chicago, they bounce off each other and across the stage like a Warner Bros cartoon. Their show, their sound is larger than life, the band is the brothers on brass (four trumpets, two trombones, a euphonium, a... Read More
Father John Misty

Father John Misty is the stage name of J Tillman, who resigned his post as Fleet Foxes band member last January. He was the drummer, and a hired gun at that, so his departure caused barely a ripple in the duck pond of global music appreciation. But anyone who has seen Fleet Foxes live would know that J Tillman was destined for bigger things. Even from behind the kit, he vied for the role of... Read More

What a year it’s been for The Rubens. The four-piece was only hatched in early 2011, yet they’ve already scored a #57 spot in triple j’s 2011 Hottest 100, jetted across to New York to record their debut album with big-shot producer David Kahne, and now they’re getting ready to play a host of sold out shows and massive festivals around the country. Now they’ve returned to their hometown of... Read More

The first time I heard Can’t Get Better Than This was early one rainy morning on triple j. There was something strange and a bit magical about the track, with its spooky, repeated vocal hook and propulsive house beat; it was one of those rare moments in which you find yourself jolted to full attention, turning the car stereo right up in the hopes that you’ll catch the artist’s name. The single... Read More

Now, the energetic lass has the support for the likes of Pete Tong and Annie Mac. 100% chats with lady who’s just about to release her debut compilation, Welcome To Wonderland. “I used to take the train to Hamburg and Berlin a lot while I... Electric Guest

Los Angeles duo Electric Guest make sprightly indie pop that recalls the cheesier side of ‘70s MOR as much as it does contemporary bands like Phoenix. The pair are on the fast-track to next big thing status – they recently played a series of showcase gigs at The Echo in Los Angeles, and in spite of the fact that they only had one single to their name at the time, the shows were a smashing success...   “Wild. It’s been wild,” Husky Gawenda understates, shaking his head with a laugh. The Melbourne songwriter and his cousin Gideon Preiss are sitting across from me at a table in Austin, Texas after just coming off stage at The Aussie BBQ – the now infamous Australian showcase held each year at South by South West, aka the indie music world’s Spring Break. It’s Husky’s first time in Austin... Read More

Splendour Tickets Still Available Thanks To Westpac

Fate struck hard yesterday with Westpac bank's huge technical difficulties striking on the same day as Splendour In The Grass ticket sales. Aside from also affecting a lot of people who didn't want to go to Splendour and just wanted to use some money (sometimes we live in a bubble), Westpac's ridiculous meltdown yesterday managed to crash the Splendour site and piss off a lot of hungry punters....
