Joe McKee @ The Grace Darling
0 Comments. 525 Views. Posted 28 Aug 2012 @ 2:48pm.
After breaking away from the grand and ghoulish Snowman, former frontman Joe McKee has found a more subtle form of expression as a solo artist. While his old band expertly drew listeners in using suspense and tribal drumming as its main weapons of seduction, in his new incarnation, loops and well-pronounced vowels do all the work. As an environment, the Grace provides buckets of support for... Read More

For a man readying himself to step onto stages throughout Australia all on his own, without his once iconic band standing with him, Joe McKee sounds remarkably self-assured. A humble determination and confidence can be heard in his voice, both throughout our twenty-minute conversation and on his debut solo record, Burning Boy. It’s a bold reinvention of sonic character for McKee, whose time... Read More

Joe McKee is embarking on an album tour this August to launch his debut solo record Burning Boy. Recorded with long time collaborator Dave Parkin in Perth, Burning Boy was written in various countries over a three year period, all over the globe. Burning Boy itself is a bold shift for McKee. Gone is the pulsing rhythm section so often omnipresent in his work, replaced by a breathy and somewhat... Read More

The first solo album from Snowman’s Joe McKee represents a stark contrast to his former band’s sound, though it shares the ambience and sparseness that crept into the band’s swan song, Absence. The biggest change is McKee’s warm, crooning vocal, a far cry from the rabid shriek of his Snowman vocals. Where he once chimed in as one part of the chaotic ensemble, his voice is now front and centre,... Read More

In launching his solo career, Joe McKee has been identified as the former frontman of Perth indie anarchists Snowman, which is confusing because he’s not a diminutive, vaguely threatening Southeast Asian kid. Joe was in fact the creative partner of Andy Citawarman, who was Snowman’s actual lead singer. Joel was the other guy in Snowman, who sang sometimes. None of this is really relevant... Read More

Hyena (Dot Dash/Remote Control) Snowman have emerged from several silent years to announce that their next album will be their last. They've each migrated to a different far flung locale and it's too hard to get to practice, apparently. Whatever, I say, and what the fuck? What sadism leads a band to record something as intense and amazing as Hyena then casually note that the fat lady is singing... Read More
