Are you excited about the return of Talkin’ Poofy to MICF?

I’m so excited. It’s turned into this thing of awesome fun that occasionally, people pay us to do! When you have two other people on stage, you can be a bit more fearless. It’s great to be on stage with people that a), are going to laugh when you’re funny and b), are going to drag you back from the brink. I spend as much of my time on stage giggling and laughing as I do on my material!”

How did the three of you bring Talkin’ Poofy to fruition?

We were doing a gig in Adelaide in 2001. We had a ridiculous fun time in the hours before the show, nursing hangovers, looking for breakfast and the show became this weird, annoying thing we had to do at night time. Toby has an outrageous vocabulary, he’s witty and arcane; it’s what Oscar Wilde would be doing if he was alive. Then there’s me, with my poo jokes. And Scott Brennan, who we make fun of because he’s a rampant slut!”

What’s your intent for Talkin’ Poofy?

It explains to straight people what it actually means to be gay. People have this sanitary vision of what it’s like to be gay, people think you’re a Ken Doll with a plastic mouth, a leather head and you’ll never have a sex life. The show doesn’t have innuendo; we talk about putting things in-our-endo! The show is warts and all. Anal warts, usually.”

Scott Brennan, Adam Richard and Toby Sullivan perform Talkin’ Poofy at Vic’s Bar at The Victoria Hotel from April 1 – April 23. It’s on Fridays and Saturdays at 11pm and tickets are $20 from Ticketmaster online, 1300 660 013 or at the door.
