Sam McCool’s sophomore Comedy Festival show focuses on the most fashionable mode of protest around

Sam McCool’s sophomore Comedy Festival show focuses on the most fashionable mode of protest around – shoe chucking. In his ShoeChucka show, McCool asks the question: If you could chuck a shoe at anybody or anything around the world in protest, who or what would it be?

Nearly 20 world leaders have had shoes chucked at them. I thought why stop there? Why stop at politicians? There must be countless everyday people or things we’d all love to chuck shoes at. Comedy is a great outlet for comics, but also for audience members to vent their frustrations,” Sam says.

McCool has used Facebook to get feedback on likely brogue recipients: “I’m no social media connoisseur, but I think it’s always a positive step for artists to engage new media… it’s definitely allowed some people to vent (as you can see on the ‘ShoeChuckas’ Facebook page).

And there’s been quite a lot of interesting feedback. “Everyone has a comment. I’ve never met a person that doesn’t have something that frustrates them… for Tiger Woods it’s predictive text, for Ned Kelly it was his Iron Burka, for Osama Bin Laden it’s when people leave the cave door open! Probably the best shoe chucking topic from punters so far though is the Shane Warne/Liz Hurley match up; most people would agree that’s a fool’s toss!”

McCool is even open to the idea of the tables being turned. “Personally, I’ve never chucked a shoe in anger… I chuck jokes instead. The shoes were supposed to be symbolic, but I’m allowing willing audience members to chuck a shoe or two at the ShoeChucka himself… Comedians are accountable too!”

Sam McCool performs ShoeChucka at Northcote Town Halls’ Studio 2 from April 13 – April 23. It’s at 7pm Monday – Sunday. Tickets are $10 – $19 and available through 9481 9500, northcotetownhall.com.au or at the door.
