Call them “awkward” as much as you like, but the simple truth is that San Cisco know how to work their magic – and they’ve proven that. Entering triple j’s Unearthed Competition because “it’s just something that you do now”, the Fremantle foursome have gone from strength to strength since uploading their song on the program. Speaking to the band’s drummer, and only female member, Scarlett... Read More

If you’re looking for slick production, atmospheric soundscapes or catchy pop hooks, you best look elsewhere. If you dig fat, bawdy grooves, lots of exuberant hollering and music that’s generally free of spit and polish, then Sherriff are your bag.   This is the Melbourne three-piece’s debut EP, and it’s a raw and beer-soaked as it is fun. This band’s music sounds like it’s the... Read More

A sucker for plaintive, slow-burning 'kiss-me-I'm-dying' instrumental outfits is what I am, so, Melbourne trio The Television Sky find their recent six-tracker in good hands. Treading the line between suitably messy and heartbreakingly exultant, We Trust That The Moon Shall Guide Us is a success just as far as respectful arrangement and loping crescendos-as-foreplay are concerned. I... Read More

Australian rock royalty The Fauves are set to launch their tenth (tenth!) studio album Japanese Engines at The Northcote Social Club this Friday November 11. We asked Andrew Cox from the band to take us through their releases to date. Drive Through Charisma (1993) We stumped up $15K for our first album and somehow managed to stooge Polydor into signing us who were then stuck with us... Read More

Following last year's Great Deeds Against the Dead, Melbourne band Gosteleradio will be debuting their newly released, self-titled EP. Their particular brand of dreamy pop-rock lies somewhere between The Beatles in the 70's and Band of Horses, with spaced-out vocals and peaceful chord progressions draped over laid-back, tambourine-infused drum beats. Nao Anzai, a long time mixer for the... Read More
Split Seconds

It seems like there's a Western Australian invasion happening at the moment. Just as Brisbane seemed to rule much of the ‘90s, and as Adelaide lobbed quite a few bands over the border in the ‘70s, the influx of WA bands doesn't seem to be letting up. The Panics are about to hit town with fellow WA bands Split Seconds and Grace Woodroofe in tow. It's the first interstate tour for Split Seconds,... Read More
Yuck

It’s dinnertime in LA when I catch Daniel Blumberg, frontman of burgeoning UK shoegaze-revivalists Yuck, in the midst of ordering a taco banquet. It’s breakfast time in Melbourne and I’m barely awake after overindulging on tacos (and shiraz) the night before. Sometimes life’s poetic like that. Anyway, Yuck are in LA to kick off a USA-wide co-headlining tour with our very own Tame Impala. Though... Read More
