Raw Nerve is a national film production initiative supported by Screen Australia. In Victoria it is managed by Open Channel. This year Raw Nerve has offered three talented emerging Victorian filmmakers the chance to begin their journey to Hollywood by making a high quality, low budget short film with support from some of the industry experts.

This year a record 79 scripts were submitted, with Open Channel Producer Marc Gracie saying that “It has been incredibly tough to pick just three. There is so much talen out there. I’ve been blown away at the quality of the scripts and the intelligence of the writers, directors and producers behind them…”. However, despite the abundance of talent that poured into Open Channel only three could be selected and here they are.

Bruce Lee Played Badminton Too is the story of Nic, a suburban teenager who has a dream to become the greatest badminton player in the world, much to the dismay of his demanding father – a former tennis champion. Writer/Director Corrie Chen and Producer Anna Kojevnikov are recent graduates of the Victorian College of the Arts School of FIlm and Television (VCA). Corrie has had two films, Happy Country (2008) and Wonder Boy (2010) screened across a number of film festivals and was selected for the Accelerator Talent Camp Program at the 2009 Melbourne International FIlm Festival. Anna has produced a number of films including, The Zombie Monologues and Wonder Boy and has also been a recipient of the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for her production of Deeper Than Yesterday.

Phone Call brings a psychological thriller (cue dramatic music) that revolves around a complex father and son relationship. Former Deakin University student, Writer/Director/Produced Daniel Separis and Co-Director Jared Deparis are both established actors with roles in Blue Heelers, Stingers, and The Saddle Club to name a few. The due combine their extensive experience in the screen industry to bring you their short film.

Switch is set in an outer-suburban skate park, where the tension between two sisters comes to head (Grrr..). Writer/Director Phoebe Hartley is fresh out of her Director Internship with Neighbours and has made a number of corporate videos and short films including, The Confession which was filmed entirley on a mobile – she’s got skills!

Congratulations to the winners, it sure will be exciting to see how these wonderful ideas look up on the big screen!
