Police Cops: Police Cops!

Arriving as a 60-minute riot of action and comedy, Police Cops! cheerfully mocks the cop films of the ’70s – right down to the luscious mustaches. Featuring Zack Hunt, Tom Turner and Nathan Parkinson in starring roles, it’s set to bring a healthy dose of Starsky and Hutch inspired brilliance to this year’s MICF.

“It’s taking the piss out of American film culture,” says Parkinson on the show’s attitude towards the shows it relentlessly spoofs. “It’s not mean-spirited though. It’s a nice mixture of a piss-take and a loving homage of the ’70s and ’80s overly masculine action figure.” Parkinson and his crew are also bringing the sex appeal of the era too. “Partial nudity is to be expected,” he laughs. “We get down into our underwear.”

While laughs are plentiful within the show, Police Cops! is also loaded with a stirring narrative, which Parkinson says will capture the audience’s interest with characters based on the brilliant character clichés of the era. “There’s Jimmy Johnson – a rookie. He’s a naïve young protagonist who is driven by a personal vendetta and Harrison, a renegade retired veteran who plays by his own rules.”

Of course, every good cop drama needs a villain. Not to mention, a hard-edged Chief of Police. That’s where Parkinson comes in. He plays multiple roles to make sure no stereotype is left unturned. Capping it off comes car crashes, hostage scenes and shootouts. Well, sort of.

“The show is run on a shoe string budget,” he says. “It’s more like we are suggesting explosions. It’s Shakespearean in a sense.”
