When Beat last spoke to Passion Pit's frontman Michael Angelakos, his insight into the turbulent period that made up the album's writing period was painfully honest. "Most of these songs are about people, told by a person: me, who is seriously delusional," he said, of the album. "I became obsessed with ensemble casts, theatre-to-film adaptations, and developing several characters' life stories... Read More

Passion Pit are inextricably linked in my head to Parklife and what I am now calling the Parklife Generation. In the late '80s, R.E.M. released a painful tune called Shiny Happy People (which was so awful that the awfulness of it has echoed down through the ages without losing any of its awful intensity). In that song, R.E.M. sang about ‘shiny happy people laughing’ in what could only be... Read More

At face value, you’d expect the mastermind behind shimmery pop outfit Passion Pit to be as chirpy as the infectious melodies and catchy hooks he crafts. But dust off some of that sherbet coating and you’ll find that Michael Angelakos has been battling with some serious mental health issues for quite a long time. What’s more, these struggles can be found laced through the veins of the group’s new... Read More

Welcome to winter, friends. Get your coats and your boots out, it's gonna be a long one - well, not for me, as I plan on hibernating throughout the whole freezing, miserable affair, but for those of you with real-world obligations to attend to, there's a light at the end of the tunnel! Parklife has just announced dates for the 2012 edition, and after last year's sunsplashed affair... Read More

Looking back, last year's Harvest lineup was nothing short of fucking awesome. And despite a few logistical mishaps in the inaugural Melbourne leg, the festival established itself as one of the giants on the calendar. As a result, expectations are running high for this year's instalment. Let's take a look at who might be gracing the lush surrounds of Werribee Mansion. First up, we can rule out... Read More

Summer: The sun is shining, the beers are cold, the beach is calling and there's usually one iconic album that's of 'the moment', and on permanent repeat. MGMT's Oracular Spectacular was one that immediately springs to recent mind and upon hearing certain songs now, instantly conjures up memories of festivals, road trips and other summer-fun stuff from that particular period. This year,... Read More
