Mutemath @ Billboard

Love hurts, you guys. I know because this show basically exacerbated an existing neck injury I had, but no one could help throwing themselves around to nearly every track. When Mutemath last came out to our city they played The Corner, and its stage felt almost unable to hold them. Billboard however has a nice big stage but remains an intimate space, and with its tiered wooden floor we were all... Read More

Mutemath’s third LP Odd Soul featured a dirtier rock sound than their first two albums. According to singer/keyboardist Paul Meany, the sultry grooves that surfaced on the album were a reflection of what they were listening to around the time of making it. “We certainly were going through a James Brown phase when we started that record,” he says. “We were rediscovering Black Sabbath,... Mutemath have made a huge impression in Australia during their first visit in this form, and they’re not coy about expressing their joy. It’s a grand thing, considering the acts they’ve been offered up to as (sacrifice?) support in the past, and no wonder Warner had problems deciding what to do with them – so much so their contract was nearly shelved early on. The New Orleans four-piece are... Read More

Mutemath's own Darren King is quite the connoisseur of obscure records. The temptation to pry into his purchases proves simply irresistible, the drummer only too happy to rattle off a list of recent acquisitions. “I've got a new one called Thai Funk. It's great, it's off of Bangkok ZudRangMa Records. I have another one called The Sounds Of Siam and one called Beautiful Rivers And Mountains: The... Read More
