Australian fans of Swedish metal legends At The Gates rejoice, the band have announced their debut tour of our fair land. The band made a full reunion in 2010, but didn't make clear any plans to record or tour extensively. This is why the upcoming Australian tour presents an extremely rare opportunity to catch the '90s masters of melodic metal live in all their brutal fury.   Read More
Q&A: Madhouse
0 Comments. 868 Views. Posted 13 Jul 2012 @ 1:50pm.
So then, what’s this Madhouse we keep hearing about? The Madhouse is Melbourne’s new home of metal. We’re a club dedicated to all styles of ‘real’ heavy metal from power and prog metal, classic metal and hard-rock, through to thrash, black and death metal. Of course we won’t get into sub-genres or we might need an extra 120 seconds…   What made you decide to open the Madhouse?  I felt... Read More

You all have one: the album that got you into metal. Maybe it was Master of Puppets. Maybe it was a Sabbath album. Whatever it was, you listened to that album from start to finish multiple times – on a daily basis. You savoured every drum fill and tempo change. You perfected air guitaring what you believed to be the correct guitar parts while headbanging around your room and trying not to... Read More

Closing the curtain on a stellar career spanning two decades, doom metal legends Catheral have announced their last ever headline shows as part of two exclusive sidewaves.  In over 20 years on the scene, Cathedral have proved themselves to be a band who not only transcend metal, but all or any genre classifications one might attempt to restrict them within. Yet far beyond all expectations,... Read More
Dylan Hammond

Dylan Hammond is a young singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who has drawn inspiration from a heavy metal loving background and channelled it into a pretty unique, acoustic based musical presentation. He is the modern day wandering minstrel, traversing the country and beyond and making his living as pretty much a one man band, utilizing modern day music technology to create a full band... Name/Band: Southpaw   Define your genre in five words or less: Groovy sex metal, yeah baby!   Someone walks passed as you're playing; they get a beer and tell their friend about you... what do they say? This band makes me wanna grab my genitals and scream really loud 'I'M INTO THIS, FUCK YOU!'   How long have you been gigging and writing? We have been together for nearly a... Read More

RAWR! Soooo, how about that Soundwave lineup, innit. You've already forgotten how bad that lot fucked you over with the Revolution debacle, haven't you? As well you should. You're an easily swayed sort and probably taste your own butthole when you think no-one is looking. Everyone loves the '90s and early naughties, which is what we're gonna be aurally feasting upon in excess around March next... Read More

Q&A: Contrive Vs. A Lonely Crowd
0 Comments. 1,954 Views. Posted 22 Sep 2011 @ 11:37am.
Contrive questions A Lonely Crowd:   What is the message and or inspiration behind A Lonely Crowd? We’re not that deep, but we always wanted a band name that's also an oxymoron.   Do you think flutes are too grim to be added to Metal? Not if you play them upside down.   What approach do you take musically to stand out of the somewhat currently overcrowded heavy music scene? We... Read More
Heaven The Axe

Heaven the Axe could certainly be the next band to break out of the sluggish Australian heavy rock and metal scene and really make a name for themselves not only on the national, but global scene. Featuring some of the absolute cream of the Aussie heavy music scene, such as former members of Damaged, Manticore, The Berzerker, The Amenta and many more, the band is also fronted by the very... Jason Bittner has amassed one of the strongest names for himself within the drumming fraternity. Not only has he had success relentlessly touring and recording with American metal band Shadows Fall, he has been an A-list clinician for many years on behalf of his sponsor companies, touring all over the world and offering his unique perspective on metal drumming. This year, for the first time... RAWR! So far, 2011 has been the best year for metal since 2001 saw classic releases all coming from Converge, Isis and Opeth (Blackwater Park, fark yers!). Shee-hit, even ’04 was good times with the Dillinger Escape Plan’s Miss Machine and Mastodon’s monstrous Leviathan. I can’t remember ever being so bowled over by class-A heaviosity so early in the piece, though. Blut Aus Nord’s 777- Sect(s)... Read More

RAWR! There comes a time in every aged band's life where it's time to shut up shop and call it a day. Give yourself a good few years to make a decent enough impression that you could legitimately call yourself 'recognisable beyond the walls of this comparatively tiny, meaningless country's concept of what's what'. If the real world consistently fails to give a fuck, stop. Why? Because to... Read More
Morbid Angel
0 Comments. 2,413 Views. Posted 30 May 2011 @ 11:25am.
The last time we saw alphabetically-inclined Floridian metallers Morbid Angel 'round these parts was in '09. The thing is, if modern technology would get its arse into gear, we could see them every weekend vomiting gore into the stale pensioner air of the Northcote RSL. "I mean, fuckin' Star Trek, man," starts bassist and vocalist David Vincent. "Everything that they've come up with thus far -... Read More
The Haunted

The Haunted are of that increasingly rare breed in metal: they're a band who actually try to extend themselves with each new album they create, challenging their audience at the same time. Too many metal bands play it safe and stay well within the confines of their tried and true sound, if only for fear of backlash from narrow minded and change-averse fans (especially in this day and age of '... Frankenbok

To say Frankenbok have become a stalwart on the Aussie metal scene is like saying the Geelong footy club have had a reasonable last four or five years in the AFL. Not that they haven’t continually transformed themselves musically since they formed in 1997, mind you. Starting out as a kind of ‘quirky’ metal band who owned a penchant for some weird covers and featuring clearly Mike Patton-... Read More
Make Them Suffer : Lord Of Woe EP

Australia has produced some truly world class metal in the last decade or so, even in the very specialised field of symphonic/melodic black metal. For example, Sydney's The Amenta have released two mind-blowing albums that have effectively combined that symphonic black metal sound with an industrial and electronic approach; both have gleaned well-deserved national and international... Melbourne singer/songwriter/guitarist/purveyor of ‘smugcore’, and even ‘goblin-core’, Tim McMillan has had an interesting musical journey. Beginning in the usual humble surrounds some ten years ago in various local metal bands, he has evolved into a unique and highly talented artist, one who very much does things his own way. His music is a quirky... Read More
