Even heavier than its precursor, Electricity is the B-side to R U Mine?,released to support Record Store Day.   Next month, the former Screaming Trees front man and occasional vocalist for Queens Of The Stone Age releases his first Mark Lanegan Band album since 2004. The Gravedigger’s Song is a steady, creepy opener, wide in scope and full of malice. It evokes the horror rock of Marilyn Manson, without descending into full bore goth hysteria.   Read More

An Arctic Monkeys album opener is such an emphatic statement of intent that it's imbued with more intensity and hooks than most contemporaries are capable of eliciting across half an album. She's Thunderstorms' seductive, searing post-punk elucidates Alex Turner's inimitable turn of phrase ("Acrobatic blood concertina / Cheating heartbeat, rapid fire") before a wailing guitar solo steers the... Strangest musical resurrection of the year? Word. A bunch of dudes who all played in one of the most influential underground heavy rock acts of the last couple of decades, mostly at different points in time, all gracing the stage to play songs they’d mostly not recorded together, largely written by another dude who refused to be a part of any of it? Hmm.   And you know, I had my... Read More

Jesse Hughes is the moustache-touting, cigar-smoking, somewhat-politicked frontman of US supergroup, Eagles Of Death Metal and one goddamn sexy man. In a dose of pure excellent, next weekend Melbournites are going to get the international premiere of his solo project that consists of him on guitar and vocals and Hughes’ Hispanic pornstar girlfriend Tuesday Cross on bass, at Melbourne’s most... Out of all the side projects undertaken by members of Queens Of The Stone Age – Them Crooked Vultures (Josh Homme), Eagles Of Death Metal (Homme and Joey Castillo), Sweethead (Troy Van Leeuwen) and The Dead Weather (Dean Fertita) – Michael Shuman’s Mini Mansions is easily the boldest departure from their day job. The psychedelic/dream-pop trio – comprising the QOTSA bassist on lead vocals,... Read More

Queens Of The Stone Age

As the heaving mosh pit swayed fiercely to the rhythms of those grinding rock staples and ardent fans lost their composure over each inexplicably unlawful groove, any sense of trepidation felt within the throng of frenzied devotees was replaced by a euphoric catharsis. Indeed, after witnessing Queens Of The Stone Age live, there is no need for clarification as to why the Palm Desert... Read More
