Even heavier than its precursor, Electricity is the B-side to R U Mine?,released to support Record Store Day. This one is a mess of distortion, the vocals buried beneath the slapping would-be Dave Grohl drums and the rolling QOTSA guitar line. Doesn’t sound like it was much of a song to start with, but the production makes it one big forgettable stew of sound.

Next month, the former Screaming Trees front man and occasional vocalist for Queens Of The Stone Age releases his first Mark Lanegan Band album since 2004. The Gravedigger’s Song is a steady, creepy opener, wide in scope and full of malice. It evokes the horror rock of Marilyn Manson, without descending into full bore goth hysteria.

Strangest musical resurrection of the year? Word. A bunch of dudes who all played in one of the most influential underground heavy rock acts of the last couple of decades, mostly at different points in time, all gracing the stage to play songs they’d mostly not recorded together, largely written by another dude who refused to be a part of any of it?
