Experience Jimi Hendrix
0 Comments. 580 Views. Posted 9 Jun 2012 @ 12:07pm.
It's more than 45 years since Jimi Hendrix was unleashed on an unsuspecting public. Nobody could have predicted his existence just a few short years before, and now it's impossible to imagine how the course of rock music would differ had he not graced us with his presence for those few short years before his death in 1970 at the age of 27. On Saturday June 23 an army of some of Australia's best... Read More

Making (radio) waves all over the web since earlier this year, online streaming service Rdio started with a bang with a launch party featuring some shit-hot acts in Sydney. Now Melbourne audiences won't be feeling left out, with a corker of a lineup helping spread the Rdio word this May. Presented by Vice, the launch will feature the cream of local and Kiww talent.   The night will feature... Read More
Stonefield

What started out as jamming in the family shed soon turned into something extraordinary for Stonefield. Coming from a tiny rural town just north of Melbourne, the four Findlay sisters – Amy, Hannah, Sarah and Holly, were just coming to the end of recording their first EP, Through The Clover, when their mum mentioned that they should apply for triple j’s Unearthed competition. Apprehensive... Read More
The Panics

When I chat to The Panics front man and songwriter Jae Laffer, his voice seems just a little bit croaky. It is completely understandable however, given the fact that just the night before his band had the dream task of supporting legendary UK electro pioneers New Order. “We had a really good time there,” he enthuses. “It was really good, you know we grew up on loads of bands from that time... 60 Seconds With... Husk

So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band? My name is Steve Rodrigues, and I play noise/guitars for Husk.   Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?Soundgarden, A Perfect Circle, and Rage Against The Machine. All your favourite 90s bands put in a blender, sprinkled with a little Pink Floyd.   What do... Read More

So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band? We're called TV Snow and I play guitar.   Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like? A mix of Bombay Bicycle Club, and Silversun Pickups, plus a sprinkle of awesome.   What do you love about making music? Creating something from nothing, and hearing what... Read More
Vintage Trouble : The Bomb Shelter Sessions
1 Comments. 1,200 Views. Posted 2 Feb 2012 @ 6:45am.
I had high hopes for this record; talks of ‘juke joints’ and the ‘essence of the original soul movement’ got me quite excited. The dapper looking cats who make up Vintage Trouble certainly look like they could belt out some soulful sounding vintage rhythm ‘n’ blues but unfortunately what’s on offer on The Bomb Shelter Sessions is some standardised blues rock with a, dare I say it – ‘funky’ edge... We love ourselves some fresh parties here at 100%, and Bwomp! is no exception – the latest series of nights dedicated to pushing the most cutting-edge, futuristic sounds in hip hop and dance.  Lineup number one sets what we think is a pretty excellent precedent for what’s to come, with acclaimed turntablist DJ QBert leading the charge. Growing up in Los Angeles was. Winning the title of DMC... Read More
The Charge

The Charge are a tricky band to pin down. Sure, there are elements of grunge which reveal themselves quite readily - imagine an unholy Chimera featuring parts of Alice In Chains, Nirvana and Soundgarden, mixed with earlier and later sounds of Sabbath, Mastodon and QOTSA - but that doesn't tell the whole story. There's a uniqueness and directness to their compositions and delivery which definitely... Read More
Chase & Status

With the advent of electricity and its application to amplification and then that whole microchip computer thing (that I'm sure is just a phase) music has altered more in the last 100 years then it had in the previous 800. And with this focus on exploiting and innovating technology rather then mastery of an instrument, music, particularly dance music, has seen the leading artists become... Read More
Stonefield : Yes Master
0 Comments. 1,543 Views. Posted 2 Nov 2011 @ 11:38am.
The lovely sisters Findlay (of the Macedon ranges) return with another seventies-inspired heavy rock single. Yes Master features more solid wailing from drummer/vocalist Amy, and chunky guitar riffs that slam against each other, but again, it's not a hit and it's not authentic. The girls, who started out playing Hendrix covers, have yet to find their own sound. Read More
Diesel

Diesel has always been one of Australia's finest blues-rock guitarists and vocalists. The one and only album by Johnny Diesel & The Injectors revealed a Hendrix-inspired, gutsy, high-energy performer who appreciated the subtleties as well as the extravagances of a century’s worth of blues and soul history. As Diesel and under his real name, Mark Lizotte, he's flirted with other styles since,... Read More

Azari & III : Manic

Canadians Azari & III played to a small but spastically drunk crowd at the Prince a few months ago, which is what happens when you wait until one o'clock in the morning to start your set. They were a fabulous pair, with their retro future funk, sequined jackets and shiny lycra pants, but a little too rich for my blood. Manic, for example, sounds like Prince made love to an 808 and made a... Read More
The Laurels : Black Cathedral
0 Comments. 1,755 Views. Posted 20 Jul 2011 @ 2:50pm.
The Laurels are a psych rock outfit from Sydney and Black Cathedral is the opening track on their Mesozoic EP. This warped, grinding, bluesy tune has all the hallmarks of the stoner come wall-of-guitar sound - a churning rhythm, spacious, climbing riffs and a hypnotic melody, all brooding storminess and agitation. If it doesn't advance the genre much, it at least demonstrates how good it can be... Read More
Blonde On Blonde : Are You Entertained?
0 Comments. 2,214 Views. Posted 15 Jul 2011 @ 11:38am.
A pretty straight up chart rock track with a funky rhythm and a tidy hook. There are stoner elements to this sound, but Are You Entertained? has too much polish and bounce to really fall into this category. A Monster Magnet kind of tune – guitar heavy, but driven by the melody. Read More
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez : Telesterion

What on earth are you doing, señor? One of the most gut-bustingly productive musicians of his generation attempts to distill eight years and nineteen albums (nineteen solo albums, that is) into two hours of double-you-tee-effery on most sonic fronts. I will be stabbed if I call poor form on this release, but… it's puzzling, nonetheless. It's not like there's any need for Omar to resort to... Read More
The Harlots : Lady Maria
0 Comments. 1,984 Views. Posted 31 May 2011 @ 11:59am.
The Harlots are launching Lady Maria at The Evelyn on Thursday, a blues rock number that hobbles through some late seventies Rolling Stone references. In a town where blues rock is something of a noble plague, this is strangely uninspired. The arrangement is decent and they play it well, but the whole band needs a shot of adrenalin up the keister somehow. They also need to get their chops up to... Read More
