Pull out those black turtlenecks folks and put on your dark glasses, the Melbourne International Jazz festival is coming back to town this June 4 – 13. And as you’d expect from Australia’s premiere jazz festival, there are more concerts, jam sessions, experimental instrumentals and international acts than you can poke a fretless bass at.

With over 400 performers from Australia and abroad, somewhere in excess of 120 events and more than 40 free shows the 2011 MIJF is going break like a wave of espresso over Melbourne this winter.

Some of the worlds top jazz names, Sonny Rollins, Charlemagne Palestine, Lee Konitz and Ron Carter to name but a star studded few, as well as bands from all over the planet, Faust, Sun Ra Arkestra and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (the Gorrilaz’ brass band), are heading out to Melbourne this year to play at the festival.

Not only is there a plethora of events for the veteran jazz listeners this year’s festival has more accessible shows for the new fans, including Play School’s Big Jazz Adventure and Artplay Jazz For Kids for the littlies and Urban Mesh Workhouse for teens at Signal.

And strung out across the festival, which covers the Queens Birthday Long Weekend we might add, are free shows at Fed Square and the Metlink Muses will be found somewhere on public transport, brightening your day with song (you know, if that’s your thing).
