House music veteran DJ JNETT discusses her many projects and her love of music

Hailing from Melbourne, she began her career as a presenter on ABC’s legendary live music program Recovery. Since then, DJ JNETT has gone on to cement her name in the house music scene, jumping behind the decks at clubs and music festivals across Australia, launching her own record labeland hosting a weekly show on PBS Radio.

“My love of music came from a place far beyond my awareness, as I’m sure is the case for many people,” she says.  “An energy that seemed already present, not as a direct result of outside influences, but a given. I was lucky enough to create pathways in my life to pursue that love.”

Moving from presenting on Recovery to slinging vinyls in the club scene was a natural progression, according to DJ JNETT. “[It] certainly wasn’t ever a grand plan,” she says. “It was, again, an energy that felt right, challenging at times, but something I feel that was meant to be.

“I’ve stayed relevant and in turn successful via a genuine love for what I’m doing. I’m constantly inspired by the quantity of quality music out there. There’s always something to find that you never heard before.”

When she’s not spinning vinyls on stage, DJ JNETT is still heavily involved in the music scene, hosting her weekly show Are You Ready on PBS 106.7FM. “I love doing weekly radio, it’s a great way to open up the wider community,” she says. “It’s definitely a community experience, as more often than not I have guests in the studio with me. It’s such a wonderful avenue to share music at any level, to an unlimited audience of all ages.”

DJ JNETT’s love of vinyl saw her launching her own record label I Get The Music, which she states was simply a way of bringing people together through a shared passion for electronic music. “I Get The Musicwas inspired by the idea of building a likeminded community via parties and music,” she says. “A collective brand that represents peace, love and good times.”

Having had her ear to the ground since the ‘90s, DJ JNETT has watched the music industry evolve around her throughout the course of her career. “The biggest change that I’ve witnessed has come about through social media,” she says. “Everything is open [to] anyone and everyone from anywhere, which is super positive.

“Another change I’ve sadly had to witness has been through the gradual neglect of turntables, and general sound quality of sound systems in venues. Although, that seems to be coming back around full circle and I’m now witnessing a greater focus and attention to sound quality which is also positive.”

DJ JNETT released her debut album Wildlife at the beginning of 2016, which received great levels of success with its irrefutable groove and diverse genre influences. “My desire is to make more music most definitely,” she says. “The plan is to hopefully release more. The big challenge is prioritising and re-arranging life and its many commitments to make this plan a reality.”

DJ JNETT, who simply describes her sound as “never the same twice” will play at The Carlton Club on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. She says fans can expect, “A rhythmical experience with lots of dancing, smiling faces, positive vibrations and lots and lots of vinyl in tow.”
