Neon Indian

2011 was a busy year for Alan Palomo of Neon Indian fame, and if his recent New Year’s Eve celebrations are anything to go by, 2012 looks to be just as jam packed. “I played on New Year’s Eve in Dallas,” Palomo begins when asked how he rang in the beginning of 2012. “It was a crazy rave in downtown Dallas with Diplo and Girl Talk and some others. It was a lot of fun. I ended up having an early... Read More

Cameron Bird isn't sounding too hot. Stuffed up, sniffling and in general, quite depleted, Bird is suffering from a bad cold. "The road, you know?" says Bird dryly in between sniffling. It's an elusive comment, but one that makes total sense if you were to take a look at hometown heroes Architecture In Helsinki's recent touring schedule. This year alone, the band has had three separate tours of... Read More

Architecture In Helsinki : Moment Bends

The press release for Moment Bends, the newie from AIH, states that this album is the "...first great modernist pop album of the year". To me it just sounds like someone has time machined back to the 80s with an array of modern day equipment...And don't get me started on Desert Island's use of pan pipes. I firmly believe that they belong on folk albums found in op-shops and buskers playing in... Read More

Architecture In Helsinki: Escapee

Architecture are a radically different band these days to the clattering ensemble of cardigan-wearing goof balls that released Fingers Crossed in 2003. They are now synth-rocking goof balls; inexplicably popular, somewhat po-faced goof balls who write ridiculous songs like Escapee – complete with farting bass notes and hollering backing vocals, elements that would be funny if they weren’t so ear... "Am I guilty? Boy, you decide." It's a legitimate question raised within the impossibly catchy hook on sorta-lead single Contact High. After a series of well-received, but hardly revelatory albums filled with rough-edged indie-pop tracks, Architecture In Helsinki have simply said "fuck it" and gone and produced a smooth, straight-faced unashamedly-pop record. The warning signs were there... Read More
