Miike Snow : The Wave
0 Comments. 650 Views. Posted 25 Apr 2012 @ 7:13pm.
Released off the back of last week’s Splendour lineup announcement, The Wave is a lovely cut from Happy To You, the second album by this idiosyncratic Swedish soul pop collective. A joyful, feather light blend of piano notes and skittering drums bubbling into vibrant electro pop, from a band that lifts the roof off a live set. Bring on July. Read More

Class Actress : Bienvenue

Lifted from Class Actress’ debut album Rapprocher, Bienvenue is racing burst of synth pop, lightly balanced between sultriness and giddy glitch rainbows. Elizabeth Harper’s voice is a wisp of a thing, airy and forgettable. Read More

NT-born Jarrah McLeary is making synth pop in a post-Vampire Weekend world, heavy on the bongos and the tropical swing, For all its lack of distinction, Magic is a nice track, happy and hooking just where it should. It kind of reminds me Romancing The Stone, too, which is excellent. Romancing The Stone is an excellent film. Read More

1. Tell us about Xanthopan and how you guys hooked up. Xanthopan is the natural step in the evolution of dance music, as it unlocks dormant memes such as rave and trance, and reconfigures them for use in left of centre electro. 2. Do you see yourselves expanding into a full band - what's the plan? We create abridged epic musical journeys, and if that requires a trombone and a triangle... Read More

John Maus: We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves
0 Comments. 1,470 Views. Posted 20 Sep 2011 @ 11:42am.
This album comes wrapped in a certain seriousness – from its wordy thought provoking title to the sobering image of a lighthouse in a storm. You might expect sombre singer song writer musings but Maus greets us with tinkling faux Baroque arpeggiations of Streetlight that is quickly enveloped in a fog of dreamy synth textures that moves to an insistent wonky disco beat. Most will file this under... Read More

Collarbones : The Ghostship

The Sydney/Adelaide electro pop duo brings us another cut from Iconography, their occasionally brilliant debut album. The Ghostship sees Marcus and Travis treading the James Blake path, blending manipulated soul vocals with icy glitch. As with Blake, the real art comes from disruption; the slice and dice approach to melody and harmony is strange and intoxicating, intensely beautiful in a... Read More

Cracking the US pop mainstream with their debut, scooping a Grammy in the process and then alienating the entire world with the abysmal follow-up, British dance-pop trio Dirty Vegas did the honourable thing and split in 2005. Now they're back to atone for their sophomore sins, firming up their dance cred by signing to San Francisco label Om Records. Fortunately, the break seems to have allowed... Read More

Sydney singer-songwriter George Byrne has relocated to Los Angeles and dropped a few letters from his name, hooked up with multi-instrumentalist producers Nic Johns and Alex Elena and recorded a synth pop tune best described as Savage Garden meets 1927. It's all very neat and tidy, and stirring in a bland white way, but too naff for indie crowd and not distinct enough to cut through on... Read More

Strange Talk : Strange Talk

You couldn't blame anyone for dreading another supposed rehash of a familiar synth-pop approach. Fortunately, however, local lads Strange Talk do much to ignite fire into the stale genre. Since exploding onto the scene into 2009, the band have tantalised many an audience with glimpses of their pop prowess. At last, their potential has been committed to disc, the results proving impressive... Read More
