A few weeks prior to My Disco’s return to the live setting in Melbourne, band members Ben Andrews and Rohan Rebeiro took their deep house side-project Kangaroo Skull to Brunswick’s Tinning Street Gallery. The smoke machine failed to perform that night, leaving a relatively weak mist to underlie the half hour of intense strobe-lighting to provide a complementary sensory overload. Tonight... Read More

Revolver on Chapel St means different things to different people. Colonel Tan’s Thai menu attracts a trendy, mid-week crowd, keen on curries, retro decor and funky tracks from days gone by. Original Banksys dot the walls, dating back to when only ‘cool people’ knew of the antagonist and his emerging form of graffiti. Shepard Fairey’s iconic Obey images paste the hallways to where The... An overcast afternoon at the Rainbow meant a relatively empty beer garden, so upon entering, the only sound that really dominated was Cash Savage's big laugh, which, if you have seen her play, is reflective of her big voice. It wouldn't be fair to call Straight To You a tribute show. While Nick Cave is still alive and well, it'd be more apt to dub Straight To You a 'Celebration of Life'. On Stones, Melbourne's Snowy Belfast play a kind of beardless bushranger folk. The recording is a bit flat, but the drums are clearly meant to thunder, the banjo meant to roll ominously. The biggest problem is singer Esther Holt, whose voice is tuneful but dull, a clean and bloodless chorister's voice that is just no good for the dark ambitions of their music. Read More

From the moment the drums kick in on Villages from Fairchild Republic's debut EP it's evident that it's not really a song, in a sense; more of an epic.
