Deep Purple

Even amongst the few surviving bands of their generation, Deep Purple are different. They suffer beneath no shadow of a former glory; they’re no caricature of the band that once was. It’s an impressive feat, given Purple are singularly responsible for the most overplayed guitar riff of all time. According to frontman Ian Gillan, who joined in 1969, the band is “working better now than it ever has... Read More

For the casual fan, Purple will be eternally remembered as the hard hitting Ian Gillan-fronted '70s heavy rock band that pumped out chart-busting hits such as Black Night and Smoke On The Water. The Purple story, however, is a lot more colourful and multi-faceted than this as the band has enjoyed a labyrinthine career characterised by multiple line-up changes, explosive ego-clashes and brave... Opeth: Heritage

Opeth have always been known for their progressive death metal sound – complex riffage, growly death vocals and heavy, heavy guitars. In their place is – get this – 1970s style jazz-fusion. Seriously. But that's not a bad thing. Opeth... Read More

You are recording your first EP. How hard and how heavy is it going to be? It's gonna be heavier than a fat ladies undies! We've been called Alt grunge but wouldn't say our sound is too heavy. We have a long list of influences ranging from Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy, to more recent bands like Stone Sour and the Fooey's. When we were looking for a drummer in our band, King Kong... Katalyst : The Clapping Song

North Carolina rapper the Coin Locker Kid worked with Katalyst on a Geoff Barrow (Portishead) project before collaborating on this tune. With snapping horns, skittering drums and a jumping Hammond organ, the Shirley Ellis classic comes spinning back to life. The only real difference is the Coin Locker Kid's mumbling, understated rhyme, which weaves in and around the song in... Read More
