It’s inevitable that every Australian show from the Brian Jonestown Massacre will be judged in the context of the band’s infamous first visit almost ten years ago. Back then, Anton Newcombe was strapped onto a psychological rollercoaster of his own chemically-induced design. It was, as one person close to the tour once remarked, more than a train wreck – Newcombe had lost sight of the... Read More

These days, however, the good ship Brian Jonestown Massacre is sailing on relatively calm seas, a trend which is consolidated by latest record Aufheben – one which continues a surprising run of consistent... Brian Jonestown Massacre : Aufheben

Perish the thought that Anton Newcombe – a man for whom psychological turmoil is the natural muse for artistic creativity – could be in the midst of a period of inner contentment. But listening to the latest Brian Jonesstown Massacre record, Aufheben – a German term that apparently may variously be translated as ‘to lift up’, ‘abolish’ or even ‘transcend’ – and there’s a sense that... Yep, you read right. Music television channel seeks shit hot, new presenter. The successful applicant will have music blazing through their veins, be prepared to circumnavigate the globe covering major music festivals and events, have the guts to ask the gritty questions and be able to hold their own when face to face with the likes of Lady Gaga, Radiohead, Kanye West or Slash. Please note: this... Read More

So I’ve gotta say, Melbourne Soundwave was an absolute delight this year. Possibly because I employed my new festival technique of ensuring I arrive in the afternoon, showered, well slept and extremely caffeinated. It’s seriously worth missing half a day of bands when you get to arrive refreshed and not looking like a sunburnt mud-dwelling goblin from hell. As usually I felt like I was... Read More

In what's set to be massive news for the band's incredibly fervent Australian following, Brian Jonestown Massacre have announced their very welcome return to our shores. We're all familiar with the long and tumultuous history of the group (if not, check out DiG! at once), as well as the magnificently rich body of work produced by the collective led by Anton Newcombe. Australia has proven... Read More

Blow Up Cinema

Many of us went through that phase in our teenage years of theming our approach to movie watching. For some it amounted to making it dark for scary stuff; others a whole new world of leg warmers for a screening of Fame. Filmmaker Gus Berger has taken the idea and run with it. Blow Up Cinema takes films to environments appropriate to their subject matter. "I came up with the idea for Blow Up... Read More
