Bollywood and beyond: The Indian Film Festival is coming to Melbourne next week

The largest celebration of Indian cinema outside of India, they're screening over a hundred films this year.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is back! They’re launching the festival with an opening night, showcasing the groundbreaking thriller film Dobaaraa. With 2022 being the year that marks the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence Day, they’re celebrating with a flag hoisting at Federation Square on Saturday, August 13.

They also have Screenings at Fed Square. They’re showing 83, a story that follows the legendary cricketer Kapil Dev’s journey leading the Indian National cricket team to victory in the 1983 World Cup. It’s screening at 3pm on Saturday August 13.

On the same day, they’re screening Badhaai Do, a story about queer acceptance in the Indian context. To hide their queer identities, Shardul and Suman agree to marry each other in a lavender marriage – a heterosexual presenting facade to make their parents happy. A heartfelt comedy film, it’s sure to bring the laughs at 6pm on August 13 at Federation Square.

They have guests such as cricketer Kapil Dev, actor Vaani Kapoor, director Kabir Khan and actor Tamannaah. Their closing night takes place at 7pm on Saturday August 20. They’re also organising a series of chats, including Representation and Storytelling, in conversation with the Jalsa team. They’re also hosting a panel called Changing narratives in cinema and streaming services, featuring coveted guests like Tamannaah (Actress K.G.F), Nikkhil Advani (Director, Mumbai Diaries 26/11), Shoojit Sircar (Director, Sardar Udham), Shibashish Sarkar (Producer), and the Joyland team to discuss this huge shift in the TV and film industry.
