Anna Salen Vs Copse

How would you describe yourselves?

“Thoughtful melodic grunge with a definite heavy kick, but everyone seems to have a different opinion, so we recommend you get yourself to a gig and make up your own mind.”

Where did the name come from?

“We’re fans of old English words… really it was a last minute pre-gig decision made with the assistance of a dictionary.”

Do you have any good gig stories?

“Our guitarist going AWOL two minutes before a gig …also watching him solo with his foot caught in a chair sticks firmly in our minds…”

What’s the hardest thing you’ve found about being in a band?

“Trying not to get stuck into too many beers before we go on stage. Something we’re working on…”

Having played your debut gig just eight weeks after your first jam, do you find song writing an easy process?

“We have multiple songwriters in the band, but we’re also our own harshest critics! This helps us refine the creation process.”

Where do you see the band in a year?

“Headlining some larger venues and touring on the back of our debut album, a follow up to our first EP we launched last year.”

COPSE putting the hard word on ANNA SALEN:

Who or what is Anna Salen?

“Anna Salen is a band named after a ship named after a girl! The ship was used to transport people into Australia during the late 1940s and it’s how our guitarist David’s grandparents arrived in the country.”

The adjective ‘experimental’ is used a lot in music. How does it relate to your sound?

“We’re an instrumental band, so ultimately this was an experiment to see if we could gig without a singer. But we all have such different influences that we weren’t sure what we would even sound like. In a way I think that’s why Anna Salen seems to work.”

How and where did you record EP?

“We recorded it at the Base Studio with Phil Threlfall over two days. He really went above and beyond what we were paying him to do. Such a good guy to work with and if you listen to our EP you’ll see the results that he gets, even in such a short amount of time.”

How does your song writing process work?

“Usually either our guitarist or bassist will present an idea that we all work on until we’re happy with it. Then the metal head drummer puts his two cents in which is usually the inclusion of a breakdown!”

If you could chose to play with any 3 bands in the world what would be your dream line up?

“David would choose Cog, Shaun would choose Meshuggah and Paul would choose Tom Waits.”
