‘All-stars’: Contact Online presents Avalanche Death and friends

words by kaya martin

On Friday April 21, the eclectic lineup will take over Angel Music Bar.

It’s not every day that Contact Online hosts events. On the rare occasion that they do, they’re in line with the rest of the project’s output – tight-knit and illuminating, with an aim of shedding light on the type of creative work that’s hard to define.

The faceless digital art and music publication has grown a cult following in certain circles. Based in Melbourne, the project gives fans a glimpse into the processes and personalities of underground music’s most elusive yet idolised figures.

This weekend, they’ve got big plans for Angel Music Bar’s coveted Music Room. Hailing from South Korea, Avalanche Death will headline the night with a bright and glittery electronic set fusing pop remixes with elements of EDM and trance.

“His last project was his own spin on early 2000s cell phone ringtones,” says Contact’s creative director Video Loss. “That was his last project before he had to do two years of mandatory military service for the South Korean army – he’s just finished that about two weeks ago.”

Avalanche Death will be joined by friends and collaborators including Brisbane’s Fatshaudi as well as Perth’s Lovefear and Contact Online co-founder Sus1er.

“We’re trying to basically make it an all-star cast type of thing,” says Video Loss. “There will be a lot of electronic music, trap remixes, dance music, post-internet and club music. These are some of the most talented musicians in Australia and it’s pretty rare to have them all in the same place at once.”

He tells me the organisers chose Angel Music Bar because of the closeness and intimacy of the space as well as its famous Funktion One speaker system.

For these events, we try and showcase artists and play music that is not the norm or not what is played at every other event, and everyone has created a very meticulously curated one-hour mix.”
