Sofala on Sofalarama, ‘Confetti Dreams’, and pure expression

What led you to making music? We all have quite different musical backgrounds; many of the members played in high school bands together, while others started playing through drunken jams and freestyle poetry sessions. The band originally formed in Bathurst before moving to Melbourne in 2016.

Tell us about your new track ‘Confetti Dreams’.  Confetti Dreams was the first song that really defined the sound we were trying to make, or at least a large a step towards it. The lyrics talk of failed aspirations, insecurities, and the vanity and narcissism that come with that. I took a lot of inspiration from Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse both in the song’s meaning and its dark, wild, almost psychedelic imagery.

What do you love about making music? We all use music very differently to one another. For some, it’s about thinking deeply about the intricacies of a song’s composition and how all the elements need to work together to create the overall sound. For others, it’s about the freedom of release and that feeling of pure expression you get with music.

How would you describe your sound? Our music is groove-focused psychedelic rock. We were initially inspired by contemporary psych bands like Dungen, Boogarins, and King Gizz, although we also listen to a lot of variations on jazz, funk, and disco. We draw elements from all of these places and want to make people dance while maintaining the spacey and surreal sounds of traditional psych rock.

What can we expect from Sofalarama at The Tote? The idea of the show was to create a lineup of artists who’ve inspired us and help carry us on our journey as a band since we started. There is an eclectic lineup of soul, funk and disco to garage and punk rock. There will be some spoken word as well, and live oil and colour projections throughout the event.
