What words would best describe your sound?

“Warm, sometimes brooding, sometimes light. One of my favourite comments was from a man who told me ‘Your music reminds me of Joan Baez… but not annoying!’ “

What genre of music do you think you fit into?

“I would say Folk with a hint of Classical.”

What was the first song you ever wrote and who/what inspired it?

“I was one of those kids who was expected to sing and play classical instruments so by age five I was banging away at the piano and performing in choirs. Though I did like this more, uh, “refined” side of music, my first ‘original’ song probably came when I went through a weird phase of playing the ‘demo’ track on some flimsy toy keyboard and singing the texts from random books I found along with the tune.”

Have you had a most memorable stage moment?

“Yes! I sometimes play a cover of Why Don’t Ya Do Right? (sung originally by Peggy Lee – I think – but probably made notorious by the buxom cartoon character, Jessica Rabbit,) and one time I was half way through when this gentleman in the audience who’d probably had one or two chardonnays, whipped out his harmonica and started free-styling along. It was awesome/scary.”

To you, what is music all about?

“It’s an overwhelming feeling when you have that give/take private moment with a piece or a song, as though it was written for you. That’s what I’m interested in making; that conversation, with anybody. If one person gets it, I’m happy.”

What’ s your favourite Melbourne venue to perform at?

“I’ve been fortunate enough to play some beautiful shows ‘in the round’ run by the Melting Pot crew. The intimacy can be daunting to some, feeling a bunch of people sitting behind you, beside you, in front… but I really thrive from that type of setting.”
