Wikipedia Initiates 24-Hour Blackout

Some of the biggest websites in the world, including Wikipedia, Reddit and Mozilla, will initiate a self-imposed blackout today in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act.

The shutdowns are to protest what could well be permanent blackouts if the SOPA and PIPA pass US congress, with the bills making it possible for sites to be shut down for seemingly insignificant grievances.

The English-language Wikipedia site will be blacked out at 4pm AEST today, Wednesday January 18.

Ballsy move by Wikipedia. Let's hope these bullshit laws aren't inevitable.

SOPA & PIPA are doomed to fail, this being an election year. Every four years, this crap is rolled out, and just like clockwork, this crap is shot down. Congress, the Senate and even the Prez have vowed to kill SOPA in its crib. So there's that.
