Old Melbourne Ghost Tour

Not to be confused with the Haunted Melbourne Ghost Tour, the Old Melbourne Ghost Tour is heavy on the historical and light on the hauntings. If you are imagining some sort of Scooby gang scuffle through the city’s spooky spots, stop.

The tour kicks off from Federation Square and weaves it’s way across the brightly lit grid, past various points of vague significance, to its final destination in Chinatown. The incredibly personable Angela led the way and energetically recounted some of old Melbourne’s darker forgotten tales. The ghosts she described ranged from friendly fishermen, to dismembered ladies of the night to unfortunate opera singers and various victims of gruesome crimes. Participants were shown some real ghost hunting tools including an EMF meter to detect ghostly entities and some divining rods to communicate with said entities. Terrifyingly, the rods accurately predicted that an alcoholic beverage would soon be at hand.

The content was interesting and it’s always nice to be reminded of Melbourne’s Batmania origins, but there was not a lot in this likely to send chills down the spine. That said, it is scary how slow some people walk. Some of the stories were great, some of the standing around was not so great.  The tour might suit anyone who likes history, walking, playing with beeping electronic devices or has an eerie sense of fun. The company offers other, spookier tours, but this one is probably best for tourists and youngsters.
