MIFF announces record Cannes lineup for 2018

A record 43 feature films and shorts will come to Melbourne.

Coming in direct from the world's most prestigious film festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival will this year host over 43 films and shorts from Cannes.

With the internationally renowned celebration of cinema concluding in France just over a month ago, for many of the films making their way to MIFF, this will be their first screening outside of Cannes.

Highlights include award-winning films Shoplifters and Melbourne short All These Creatures, that both won the sought after Palme d'Or.

Exploring the heartbreak and hidden secrets of a family of small-time thieves, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Shoplifters is both a humanistic portrait and an indictment of a society so willing to cast struggling people aside. Meanwhile, All These Creatures makes a triumphant homecoming with its Australian premiere, telling the story of a young man trying to unravel the forces behind a mysterious infestation.

Elsewhere, check out Cold War -- which garnered Pawl Pawel Pawlikowski Best Director at Cannes -- alongside the magic-realist fable Happy as Lazzaro and Nadine Labaki’s Capharnaü, which received a 15-minute standing ovation at Cannes this year.

The 2018 Melbourne International Film Festival runs 2-19 August, visit miff.com.au for more details.
