The 2018 NGV Architecture Commission has commenced installation

The MUIR X OPENWORK design will be unveiled next month.

NGV's 2018 Architecture Commission, a collaborative design by Melbourne architecture practice MUIR and landscape architecture studio OPENWORK, has begun installation ahead of next month's public unveiling.

Now in its fourth year, the competition challenges architects to experiment with the space - selecting the best design to be brought to life as a temporary installation. This year's winning piece, titled Doubleground, will transform NGV's Grollo Equiset Garden by raising sections of the landscape to create a passageway through which visitors can wander. Inspired by elements of the NGV International building itself, the installation will serve as a homage to the iconic space now in its 50th year.

‘The 2018 Architecture Commission provides an intervention that challenges the role of the NGV Garden," said MUIR Director Amy Muir. "Acknowledging the intent and architectural language of the original Roy Grounds building, the Commission seeks to bring the memories of place back into play. We hope that the commission will allow visitors to see the NGV Garden in a new way.’

Doubleground will be open to the public late next month. More information can be found here
