ACMI Has Jazz On Film
For the 2011 Melbourne International Jazz Festival ACMI presents Jazz On Film; a presentation of five jazz inspired and scored films that explore the connection between jazz and the moving image.
As a part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival the Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI) presents Jazz On Film. A program that looks at the way jazz has joined together with the moving image in all its twists and turns.
From the journey of Australian drummer Simon Barker to South Korea in his search for shaman Kim Seok Chul. The film Intangible Asset No.82 documents Barker's trip across South Korea and through many obstacles in what turns into an intense emotional journey.
From the South Korean Peninsula to the island of Cuba the animated film Chico & Rita is the story of a young pianist and a beautiful jazz singer as they chase their dreams of stardom and each other from Cuba to America to Paris. Featuring the music of some of jazz's biggest names like Thelonious Monk, Cole Porter and Dizzy Gillespie the score was written by the famous Cuban musician Bebo Valdes.
Three other films are showing at ACMI during the jazz festival. Documentary Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way praises the jazz master on his 90 th birthday and looks at his early life and career. The Animated Jazz Shorts From The Hubley Studio are a stylised and musical adventure through jazz with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Carter with the work of animators John and Faith Hubley.
And last but by no means least is the 1973 cult film The Holy Mountain. Starring and directed by Chilean film-maker Alejandro Jodorowsky and with a soundtrack by free jazz expert Don Cherry the film is an LSD trip into unknown territory.
